Madrid activates a major mobility plan for the visit of Pope Leo XIV
Madrid is preparing for one of the largest mobility and transport operations of recent years ahead of the visit of Pope Leo XIV, scheduled to take place from 6 to 9 June. In anticipation of the arrival of large numbers of pilgrims and visitors, the Regional Government of Madrid and Madrid City Council have launched a comprehensive special plan that will affect both public transport services and road traffic across different parts of the capital.
Historic reinforcement of Metro and public transport services
The Regional Government of Madrid will increase Metro services by up to 125% on the lines expected to experience the highest demand in order to facilitate travel during the scheduled events. The operation includes the addition of extra trains, increased service frequencies and additional staff at key stations.
Urban and interurban bus services will also be reinforced, particularly in areas close to the main events taking place during the papal visit. EMT Madrid has already warned of possible disruptions and diversions affecting numerous routes due to road closures and traffic restrictions.
Traffic restrictions and road closures in central Madrid
The main large-scale events will take place around Plaza de Lima, Paseo de la Castellana and Plaza de Cibeles, areas where significant mobility restrictions are expected from late May and throughout the duration of the visit.
According to the plan announced by Madrid City Council, some of the most significant measures include:
- Progressive traffic restrictions and road closures on Paseo de la Castellana and around Plaza de Cibeles.
- Possible temporary closures of Metro stations in the city centre.
- Diversions and modifications to EMT bus routes.
- Reinforcement of the Municipal Police and Mobility Agents.
- Recommendations to avoid private vehicles and prioritise the use of public transport.
Travel recommendations
Authorities recommend planning journeys in advance and checking the status of traffic and public transport services on a daily basis, as restrictions may be adjusted depending on the number of attendees and security requirements.
During these days, Metro de Madrid and EMT will strengthen passenger information through stations, bus stops and digital channels to help both residents and visitors move around the city more easily.
