A-5 tunnel project: New traffic changes and progress on the Paseo Verde del Suroeste
The A-5 tunnel project in Madrid is entering a new phase, with landscaping and urban development work beginning on the surface of the future Paseo Verde del Suroeste. As work continues to complete the new tunnel, traffic arrangements are still being modified, with further changes planned in the coming days. At Príncipe Pío Transport Interchange, we bring you the latest updates and the main impacts on mobility.
New traffic changes from 23 October
Madrid City Council has announced further temporary changes to the A-5 traffic layout as construction progresses. From 23 October, the exit-lane split for traffic leaving Madrid is scheduled to change near Calle de Illescas. The lanes will run on either side of the future tunnel entrance. These changes are part of the ongoing works and the reorganisation of surface traffic. Drivers are therefore advised to check the latest traffic updates before travelling through the area.
Permanent closure of the tunnel towards Huerta de Castañeda
On 24 August, the tunnel on Paseo de Extremadura towards Huerta de Castañeda was permanently closed to traffic. It will not reopen, as the final design contemplates traffic moving at surface level. As an alternative, vehicles can use the side road alongside Paseo de Extremadura. Madrid City Council recommends prioritising public transport, avoiding the areas affected by construction wherever possible, and planning journeys in advance.
The tunnel project enters its final stages
One of the project’s major milestones was the completion of tunnel excavation in May 2026, followed by the completion of the underground civil engineering works in August. Work has also been completed to prepare the future connection between the new tunnel and the M-30 road network beneath Avenida de Portugal. This involved demolishing part of the existing structure and installing 14 beams, each 30 metres long.
According to the timetable announced by Madrid City Council, the tunnel is expected to open to traffic towards the end of 2026, although more recent statements from the city authorities also suggest that opening could take place in early 2027.
A new urban space for South-West Madrid
The Paseo Verde del Suroeste project will transform the area around the A-5 by placing the motorway underground and reclaiming the surface for public use. The project aims to improve connections between neighbourhoods in the Latina district, reduce the barrier created by the motorway and create a new urban corridor.
Surface development work is already underway in the area between Avenida del Padre Piquer and the Anillo Verde Ciclista cycling route footbridge. The project includes new pedestrian areas, a cycle lane and green spaces, all designed to improve mobility and the quality of the public realm.
